Congratulations to winners of the 2023 Roderick Boyd Porter Memorial Scholarship:

  • Morgan Garan

  • Preston Goebel

  • Rebecca Kilmer

  • Veronica McDowell

  • Sarah Roehrs

The scholarship is awarded to John Carroll students who demonstrate a nuanced understanding of the Humanities. In a novel decision, notes Dr. Phil Metres, committee chair, the Porter committee selected five recipients this year:

Morgan Garan '24 is an English Literature and AYA Education major with a minor in Computer Science. On Campus, she shows her commitment to the humanities by consulting at the University Writing Center, teaching incarcerated youth creative writing with Writers in Residence, and leading small groups at the Young Writers Workshop. Off-campus, she volunteers for creative writing workshops at Shaker Heights High School and tutors English at John Marshall High School. She looks forward to re-entering the classroom after college as a teacher and sharing her love of English with her students!

At John Carroll, Rebecca is part of Kappa Delta sorority, the Honors Program, and the current president of LGBT+ & Allies.
