CEO of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Rich Kramer ’86
On May 25, 2021, more than 70 people joined for “Kudos and Conversations,” a virtual event for Boler students and faculty to recognize alumni, network and hear from alumnus Rick Kramer ’86, who serves as Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President, of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
Kramer presented a thought-provoking look at Goodyear’s transformation into a technology-driven mobility company through his Jesuit business leadership skills. Among his goals is to always look toward forward-thinking and innovative problem solving – which he achieves through seeking creativity, maintaining confidence and engaging in regular collaboration.
Kramer posed the question: what does it mean to anticipate the next inflection point? He explains that being able to do so requires challenging yourself. It also requires a curiosity to investigate, learn what’s happening in the world, and engage in actual collaboration to solve problems together.
“It’s not as effective to send emails or use social media. You need to truly collaborate with one another and have conversations that lead to discovery, innovation and solution,” said Kramer. In addition to being creative, Kramer emphasized the importance of having the courage to speak up and bring forth ideas.
These are qualities that build successful and empathetic business leaders who are able to adapt to future trends, manage disruption and foster work environments where employees are driven to innovate. “[Rich Kramer] exemplifies what it is to be a responsible, inspired business leader,” said Jason Nedley ’19, chair of the Boler College of Business advisory committee for the Professional MBA program. He adds, “it was amazing to learn how Goodyear is preparing for the future of transportation under Rich’s leadership.”
