On October 21, 2019, the Counseling Department hosted the one-man show “How to be a Respectable Junkie,” the true story of a former heroin addict by playwright Greg Vovos. The audience was filled with students from the counseling and theatre departments. The play began with Brian (played by Christopher Bohan), recording a video on giving advice for fellow junkies. As the story unfolded, Brian’s personal struggles with addiction were revealed.
Following the performance, there was a Q&A session chaired by the department head, Dr. Nathan Gehlert. The audience had the opportunity to interact and gain more insight from the playwright, actor, and Dr. Martina Moore, the department’s coordinator of the Substance Use concentration. This event is one demonstration by the Counseling Department to advocate the needs of substance use awareness in a more creative and engaging style.
