John Carroll University proudly announces the appointment of Dan Slentz as the new Director of Blue Streak Media.
With more than 45 years of experience in broadcasting, production, and technology—including serving as Director of Technology for WOIO-WUAB Gray TV—Slentz will oversee the development of cutting-edge opportunities for students in communications and media studies.
A Cornerstone for Media Excellence
Blue Streak Media serves as the hub for John Carroll’s vibrant media ecosystem, which includes The Carroll News, the university’s acclaimed student newspaper; WJCU 88.7 FM, a dynamic radio station recently recognized as the top college radio station in the world by the International Student Broadcasting Championship (ISBC); the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA); the JCU Speech & Debate team; and JCU Studios, which provides training in all aspects of media production, from on-air talent to advanced editing techniques.
In his leadership role, Slentz will unify and elevate these student organizations, building an integrated, hands-on learning environment that empowers students to excel across media disciplines.
State-of-the-Art TV Studios Redefines Learning Spaces
One of Slentz’s key initiatives is to lead the newly renovated TV studios on campus. The facilities will feature a state-of-the-art control room, three advanced editing suites, a green screen, and an upgraded interview set, and more, giving students access to professional-level tools for media production. Renovations are already underway, with the final phase expected to be completed over the summer.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dan to the JCU community,” said Dr. Brent Brossmann, Associate Professor and Chair of the Tim Russert Department of Communication at JCU. “With Dan’s expertise and the revamped studio spaces, our students will be equipped with the skills and confidence to thrive in the rapidly evolving media landscape.”
A Trailblazing Career in Media
A Cleveland-area native, Slentz began his career at age 14 in local cable TV production and was working as a radio announcer by 16. His path has taken him through roles such as Chief Engineer, Vice President of Technology, and Director of Engineering at various notable organizations, including PBS/NPR in Dallas and Gray TV in Cleveland, where he designed a state-of-the-art multi-studio facility.
Slentz earned his Bachelor of Science in Communications from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. His international experience includes serving in the U.S. Air Force’s European Broadcast Squadron near Madrid, Spain, where he was a TV reporter, anchor, and FM radio morning show host.
“It’s an honor to join John Carroll University and lead Blue Streak Media,” said Slentz. “I’m excited to share my experience with the next generation of media professionals and help them build a solid foundation for their careers. I’m especially looking forward to helping launch the new TV studios space, which will offer state-of-the-art resources for creativity and collaboration.”
