Background

Dr. Petzel earned his B.S. in Accounting from Clemson University.  He went on to receive an M.S. in Accountancy form Wake Forest University.  Finally he completed his Ph.D. in Accounting & Information Systems from Virginia Tech University.

He began his career in accounting in the Financial Services Office of Ernst & Young LLP in Charlotte, NC and engaged in various corporate and partnership tax projects. Before pursuing a Ph.D., Dr. Petzel taught as a full time Visiting Lecturer at Wake Forest University teaching various tax and financial accounting courses.

Research

Dr. Petzel’s research interests include taxes on the financial statements, tax policy changes, and capital markets. His research has been published in a number of journals, including The ATA Journal of Legal Tax Research, The Journal of Accountancy, and Tax Notes.

Additional Information

During his time at John Carroll, Dr. Petzel has been awarded the Wasmer Outstanding Teacher and Boler Favorite Teacher Awards. He works with Wells Fargo Securities to provide training services to incoming investment banking analysts and associates.
