Expertise: Race and Ethnicity, Sociology of Education, Diversity in Higher Education and Latina/o Studies.

Biography

Dr. Vaquera specializes in Race and Ethnicity and Sociology of Education. She received a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of New Mexico. In the course of her career, she has worked from various vantage points (community organizer, mentor, instructor, administrator, and researcher), on the issue of educational attainment with particular interest in how exposure to social capital facilitates access.  She has also been actively involved in evaluation on various programs that have focused on educational access and retention in both community college and university level populations in New Mexico, Texas, and Missouri.  In Ohio, she has been an evaluator for a National Institute of Jusitice grant awarded to the Greater Cleveland Drug Court and JCU’s own, Project ¿Q.U.E.? (a middle school math and science program).  Thus, her interest in this field is informed from first-hand experiences as well as traditional academic training.
