Biography

Margaret (Peggy) Schauer, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Secondary Education. Dr. Schauer has twenty years of experience in P-12 education as a former teacher and principal in urban schools, both public and parochial. Most recently, she served as the founding principal of JFK Eagle Academy in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Executive Director and Principal of Luther Memorial School in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood. Dr. Schauer’s scholarly interests include research around teacher education, teacher identity development, critical consciousness and support for first-generation college students. Dr. Schauer is currently the principal investigator on a $200,000 grant from the Ohio Dean’s Compact that seeks to restore the pipeline of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) educators to teacher education and our P-12 classrooms. In 2023, the grant supported the launch of the Ignite Scholars Program to support first-generation college students in all majors at JCU. The founding Ignite cohort of 25 students will graduate in 2027.
