Shawn has worked in academia for the past 12 + years. 

He has taught at the undergraduate-level at Kent State University, and at the graduate-level at Youngstown State University, Malone University, and currently Assistant Professor at John Carroll University. 

Dr. Burton is also an active member of the American Counseling Association and Ohio Counseling Association. 

He has published articles and presented at state, national, and international conferences on mental health and career issues. 

Dr. Burton is also LGBTQIA+ affirmative and an advocate of multiculturalism and social justice. 

Dr. Burton enjoys teaching courses in research, counseling theories, LGBTQIA+,  and the experiential field experience course (practicum). 

Lastly, Dr. Burton is co-advisor of the Beta Chi Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, which is a national  counseling organization that recognizes academic and professional excellence in counseling graduate students.
