Fraternity and Sorority Life History at JCU

Fraternities and sororities are values-based organizations that focus on the development of leadership, scholarship, brotherhood/sisterhood, service, and community among their members. Since the founding of the first fraternity in 1776, hundreds of Greek-lettered organizations have been established across college campuses in North America.

A vital part of the student experience at John Carroll University, the fraternity and sorority community has existed since May 1939 when Alpha Sigma Nu, a national Jesuit honor fraternity, was established on campus. This rich tradition of excellence and service continues today with students involved in our two national fraternities and five national sororities.

Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) offers and coordinates a variety of programs, activities and services that are designed to ensure a quality educational and social experience for JCU fraternity and sorority members. Services and resources are provided to chapter officers, members and advisors in addition to the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils, Inter/National Headquarters representatives, alumni, community officials and the parents of fraternity and sorority members and potential members.

FSL Mission

John Carroll University’s fraternities and sororities strive to support the University mission by cultivating the development of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. By adhering to the Jesuit Catholic mission and heritage, fraternities and sororities will foster respect and integrity with the JCU community, Greater Cleveland, and the world.

Housing

A number of fraternities and sororities call Sutowski Hall home. Each organization has it's own housing policy and requirements.

Cost

The cost of membership varies from chapter to chapter. Generally members are responsible for the following costs:

  • Dues to local and inter/national organizations
  • Initiation fee
  • Alumni dues (post-graduation)

Membership in a fraternity or sorority is a financial commitment that we encourage you to explore before seeking membership.
