Merit-Based Awards
Students must apply by January 2, 2008 to be eligible for most merit scholarships

Presidential Honors Award

Who is eligible: Applicants with an A/A- average in high school in a strong, college preparatory curriculum and at least 620 scores on all subcomponents of the SAT or a 28 on the ACT.
Type of application form required: Application for admission
Basis upon which aid is granted: Initial awards based on academic merit. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to renew. Annual range: $5,000-$20,000 scholarships to approximately the top 20-25% of incoming freshmen; no repayment necessary.

Presidential Leadership Award

Who is eligible: Applicants who have made an impact in their high school community and have the greatest potential to impact the John Carroll community. Must have completed application by January 2, 2008
Type of application form required: Application for admission that includes a detailed resume of activities; students are encouraged to include an additional personal statement or reflect on the value of leadership in the required essay.
Basis upon which aid is granted: Recipients will be chosen by a scholarship committee including current student leaders.  In selecting the most qualified students, the committee considers quality, quantity, and nature of high school/community involvement in leadership, progression in the level and type of responsibility, and attitude towards leadership.  Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA as a JCU student and must attend two meetings per semester with the Leadership Development Team.  Additionally, students will be expected to participate in community service projects each year in order to renew their award.
Annual range and terms of repayment: Will bring total merit award to a range between $14,000 - $20,000; awarded to 20 students; no repayment necessary.

Arrupe Scholars Award

Who is eligible: Applicants who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service and social justice issues.  Must have completed application by January 2, 2008
Type of application form required: Application for admission that includes a detailed resume of activities; students are encouraged to include an additional personal statement or reflect on the impact of community service on their lives in the required essay.
Basis upon which aid is granted: Recipients will be chosen by a scholarship committee through an interview weekend in late February.  Students will be required to be involved in and engaged in the campus community, perform community service projects and participate on the selection committee which selects future Arrupe Scholars in order to renew their award. Arrupe Scholars will also follow a newly created curriculum both in classroom and out of classroom during their four years.
Annual range and terms of repayment: Will bring total merit award to a range between $14,000 - $20,000; awarded to 20 students; no repayment necessary.

American Values Scholarship

Who is eligible: Applicants who have made an impact in their high school community through leadership and/or service work.
Type of application form required: Application for admission that includes a detailed resume of activities.
Basis upon which aid is granted: Awards based on demonstrated leadership and/or service experience. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA to renew.
Annual range and terms of repayment: $2,500 award; no repayment necessary.

Magis Scholarship

Who is eligible: Applicants who exhibit the ideal combination of academic, leadership and service excellence. Must have completed application by January 2, 2008  
Type of application form required: Application for admission that includes a detailed resume of activities; students are encouraged to include an additional personal statement or reflect on how their achievements and experiences relate to John Carroll's mission in the required essay.
Basis upon which aid is granted: Recipients will be chosen by the Committee on Admission. Involvement in community service projects and meetings with the university leadership will be expected. 
Annual range and terms of repayment:

Full tuition grant aid less any state and federal grants will be given to no more than 10 incoming freshmen; no repayment necessary.
