How to respond to Requests from Law Enforcement Officers, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Subpoenas, and Search Warrants

If a law enforcement officer or agent approaches you on university-owned property requesting information about a university community member, contracted vendor, or alumni:

  1. Inform the officer or agent that you will be referring them directly to JCUPD.
  2. Contact JCUPD regarding the request from the law enforcement officer or agent. JCUPD is located in the D.J. Lombardo Student Center Suite 14 and can be reached at 216-397-1234.

Please follow these procedures whether you are on campus or off-campus for a University-sponsored activity. For further guidance, students should contact the Dean of Students Office, while faculty and staff should contact their supervisor.

General Guidelines on Information Access and Privacy

In order to be in compliance with applicable laws and university policies, we require that members of the university community follow the following guidelines:

  1. Confidentiality: Never disclose information about students, faculty, staff, or alumni without proper authorization or direction from the appropriate university office.
  2. Referral: Always refer inquiries to the designated offices mentioned above to ensure compliance with university policies and applicable laws.
  3. Documentation: Maintain records of all interactions related to requests for information, including the name and contact information of the requester, the nature of the request, and the steps taken in response.

If you have questions about this protocol or need further guidance, please contact JCUPD or the Office of Human Resources. Thank you for your commitment to safeguarding the privacy and security of our university community.
