Background

Dr. John Crowley-Buck is the Director of the Arrupe Social Justice Scholars Program at John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH. Originally from Boston, he completed his Ph.D. in Christian Ethics at Loyola University Chicago (2016) and served in a variety of academic and administrative roles at fellow Jesuit institutions—most recently as Special Assistant to the Vice President in the Office of Mission & Ministry, and as an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Theology & Religious Studies, at Georgetown University. At Loyola University Chicago, he was a Graduate Research Assistant and Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2009–2016) at the Joan and Bill Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage.

Dr. Crowley-Buck’s scholarship explores how questions of normativity in ethical deliberation shape our understandings of justice and human rights in the world today. He is the co-editor, with Prof. Michael Schuck, of Democracy, Culture, and Catholicism: Voices from Four Continents (FUP, 2015). Passionate about Jesuit education, he also focuses his research on issues of mission, identity, and pedagogy within the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and their institutes of higher education.
As Director of the Arrupe Social Justice Scholars Program, Dr. Crowley-Buck works with JCU students to explore the intersections of faith, justice, and civic engagement.

Under his direction, the Arrupe Social Justice Scholars Program continues to live out the vision of Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. of educating students to become people for and with others, in the service of faith and the promotion of justice.
