Background

Madeline Hric, MS, RD, LD, FAND, is an adjust professor in the Exercise Science and Sports Leadership Department at John Carroll University, and an Advanced Practice Registered Dietitian at Cleveland Clinic. She specializes in clinical nutrition, gastrointestinal pathophysiology, exercise physiology, and sports nutrition; and demonstrates a high level of skill and knowledge in nutrition education, leadership, and continuous improvement processes.

Madeline is a leader in the field as an Advanced Practice Registered Dietitian. She works full-time for the Cleveland Clinic specializing in gastrointestinal surgeries/disorders and bariatric surgery. She is an integral part of the interdisciplinary medical team providing medical nutrition therapy to prevent, diagnose, and treat malnutrition. She is a leader for several professional volunteer committees within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Prior to her current roles, her extensive graduate training with collegiate and professional athletes included working within high-performance environments, collaborating with coaches, medical staff, and strength and conditioning teams to optimize body composition, recovery, and on-field performance. Drawing on her advanced knowledge of nutrient timing, supplementation, and sport-specific demands, Madeline translates cutting-edge research into practical strategies and easy-to-understand information for students to utilize in their future careers.

Areas of Expertise

Clinical Nutrition
Registered and licensed dietitian with expertise working in the acute-care setting at one of the top 3 hospitals in the country. Focus areas include nutrition support, gastrointestinal surgeries and disorders, and bariatric surgery.

Sports Nutrition
Experience working with collegiate and professional athletes, performance data collection and analysis, supplement research and application, fueling station management, and education.

Professional Development and Continuous Improvement
Proven experience in advancing professional practice and credentials. Utilizes quality metrics to enhance medical and nutrition education programs.

Leadership and Program Development
Service on various committees within the largest dietetic professional organization. Founded and leads a hospital interdisciplinary nutrition education program for medical residents and fellows. Development of new academic courses.

Research and Grant Writing
Published in Dietitians in Nutrition Support Dietetic Practice Group Newsletter. Awarded a grant to support medical resident education and tracked progress and outcomes. Served as a guideline reviewer for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Evidence Analysis Library.

Research Interests

Madeline's research thus far in her career focuses on rare diseases and their nutritional implications. Her goal is to continue research in the clinical setting, primarily on how medical nutrition therapy can benefit patient outcomes in various disease states.
