Dr. Shanna Botos
Assistant Professor
Background
Dr. Botos is a full-time Assistant Professor of Nursing at John Carroll University, having been the first faculty member hired into the program and the inaugural holder of the endowed Medical Mutual faculty position for three years. She also served as the inaugural chair of the Department of Nursing. During her time as the chair, she tripled the student cohort size and hired two new faculty members, laying the foundation for the program's continued growth before transitioning to her current faculty role. As a dual-certified pediatric nurse practitioner, she continues to practice on a PRN basis as an inpatient provider in the department of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital in the regional hospitals. She has been practicing as a pediatric nurse for over 24 years, taking care of acutely ill children from birth to young adulthood, and has worked at Cleveland Clinic for over 17 years. One of Shanna's proudest accomplishments during her career was her time serving as the chair of the Cleveland Clinic Enterprise APRN Practice Council from 2015-2018. She was also selected as a fellow for the Johnson & Johnson Nursing Leadership program at Duke University, completing this fellowship in 2016. It was during this time that she found her passion for advocating and mentoring the next generation of nurses, integrating the importance of self care and resiliency into the foundation of her career path as a nurse educator. Her previous faculty appointment was at Case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, where she was the co-lead faculty who helped increase the pass rate for the National Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certification exam to over 80% per year. Dr. Botos' latest achievement has been the success of the Choose Ohio First Scholarship program, that she is the program director for at John Carroll University. This program secured just over 1 million dollars of scholarship funds over 5 years that will help over 70 students with their academic journeys while studying pre-health and nursing at John Carroll University.
