John Carroll University today announced the creation of the Rev. Paul A. Woelfl Political Science Scholarship, established through a generous gift from alumnus Tim Misny ’77.

The annual scholarship will help support up to two political science students per year who are interested in pursuing careers in public policy. The award reflects Misny’s commitment to advancing civic leadership and honoring the legacy of Rev. Paul A. Woelfl, the founder of the Political Science Department at John Carroll and Misny’s mentor.

To be eligible, applicants must be rising seniors at John Carroll University with a declared major in political science. Students must demonstrate financial need, maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 within the political science major, and exhibit strong academic performance. Applicants must also provide a statement of purpose about why they wish to receive the award.

“At the cornerstone of any John Carroll University education is the Jesuit values,” said Misny. “Father Woelfl epitomized that. He was first and foremost a rigorous scholar. His commitment to social justice was unparalleled and inspiring.”

“To be his friend and student was one of the best privileges of my life,” Misny continued. “To say that I would not be where I am in life if not for Father Woelfl’s guidance is a gross understatement. But moreover, I frequently ask myself a simple question when I’m confronted with a moral dilemma: ‘What would Father Woelfl do?’ It is never the easy answer, but it is always the right one. The one you can live with. The one that puts you on high moral ground. We continued our deep friendship up to and including his last days.”

While at John Carroll, Misny worked as a general assignment reporter for the Sun Newspapers. He graduated with a 3.9 GPA as a political science major. In 1981, he earned a J.D. from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.

Misny is in his 45th year as a personal injury lawyer. His statewide, multi-dimensional marketing campaign is based upon his famous phrase, “I’ll make them pay!”

“Our students are very excited for this opportunity,” said Colin Swearingen, Chair of the Political Science Department at John Carroll. “Many of them are passionate about public policy and want to use their skills to make a difference in their communities. We are deeply grateful to Tim Misny for his generosity and commitment to our students. This scholarship will have a lasting impact, helping students achieve their goals with greater confidence and support.”

The scholarship application is now open. Completed applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8. Interested students can apply by visiting our website
