Our Approach

AI has fundamentally changed the landscape of higher education. John Carroll recognizes this not as a passing trend but as a transformation that demands a principled response — one grounded in our Jesuit mission of intellectual rigor, ethical responsibility, and service.

AI minor launched

We are forming critical thinkers and ethical actors: students who understand not just how to use AI, but when and why it matters. We are preparing them for an evolving workforce by embedding AI across the curriculum — in the sciences, humanities, business, and health professions. And we are doing this in a way that reflects Jesuit values: centering human dignity, promoting justice, and engaging the whole person.

AI tools, guidelines, and training are available to all JCU faculty, staff, and students. View AI Guidelines on myJCU →

Our Commitment

Mission Statement

1

AI is transforming how we teach, learn, and work

We recognize that AI has fundamentally changed the most essential tradition in higher education: how we teach. It is not a passing trend. It is making its way into every profession, practice, and student experience. As these technologies become more deeply embedded in our society, our students must not only learn how to use them, but also how to evaluate the choices and engage them in service of the greater good.

2

We form critical thinkers and ethical actors

Our goal is within a Jesuit context: a prioritization of the whole person. We acknowledge all of those truths: that we must meet students where they are, lead them on a path that embraces a critical search for truth and ethical action, and equip them to find their true purpose in a rapidly changing, interconnected world using just, participatory, and compassionate frameworks.

3

We prepare students for an AI-enabled workforce

AI literacy is not solely becoming a programmer or building an AI system. Rather, it is the ability to critically integrate insights, make ethical decisions, and collaborate with AI tools in a context of purpose, integrity, and service.

4

Our approach is rooted in Jesuit values

We affirm our approach to AI is rooted in our Jesuit values: the proposition is engagement with this enterprise and our education and wisdom traditions, grounded in their very dignity and commitment to the common good. As partners in this work, we seek to ensure that AI serves human flourishing.

Faculty and Students on AI at JCU

Voices

Across disciplines, JCU faculty and students are already integrating AI into teaching, research, and professional preparation. Hear how they’re approaching it.

Why did you decide to minor in AI at John Carroll?

— Luka Pranjeta '27

John Carroll’s interdisciplinary AI minor complements any major, equipping students not just to use emerging technology, but to think critically about when and how it should be applied. For JCU junior Luka Pranjeta ’27, that mindset turned into action, inspiring him to launch his own business.

How is AI impacting the health professions?

— Melissa Cole, College of Health Dean

AI is rapidly transforming the health professions—just not in the way you might expect. Hear from Melissa Cole, Dean of John Carroll’s College of Health, on how emerging AI tools are giving caregivers something invaluable: more time to focus on their patients.

How have you integrated AI into the classroom?

— Mark Sheldon, Associate Professor of Accountancy

Dr. Mark Sheldon is preparing his accounting students for the future of work by bringing AI tools into the classroom and connecting coursework with real-world projects through partnerships with Cleveland businesses. His forward-thinking approach recently earned national recognition with a publication in the Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting, highlighting the innovative design of his course.
