Joanna Garcia
Associate Professor
Background
Prior to coming to JCU in 2017, I taught at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. I am from the Cleveland area, and grew up right next door in Shaker Heights.
I went to Ohio Wesleyan University for undergrad, which, like JCU, is a small liberal arts school. After graduation, I joined the Marine Corps, where I was an air support control officer stationed in North Carolina. When I got out of the Marines, I decided to try accounting (I was not a business major at OWU), and went to North Carolina State University for my Masters degree. I then worked for Deloitte Tax in Raleigh, in the Private Client Advisors group, where I worked primarily with high net worth individuals and their businesses, estates, and trusts.
After a few years with Deloitte, I decided to become a professor. I went to Virginia Tech for my Doctorate. That led me to Waterloo and eventually back home to Cleveland.
I have a 12 year old son and 4 cats at home. If we meet in Zoom at some point, you'll probably see at least some of them!
