The Blue Streak Experience
Mary Kate’s time at JCU was defined by a blend of academic curiosity and service. An Arrupe Scholar, she spent her semesters volunteering and exploring social justice while balancing a double major that included a transformative semester studying at NEOMA Business School in Rouen, France. On campus, she was a dedicated campus tour guide and a member of the Greek community; experiences she credits with teaching her how to lead with presence and attention to the people right in front of her.
Advice for Students & Peers
For Mary Kate, the heart of a Jesuit education was revealed through the profound care the JCU community showed her during the sudden loss of her father just before graduation. This taught her that leadership is "compassion in action." Her advice to current students is to be bold: "Say yes before you feel fully ready. Growth usually looks like a new role you didn’t plan for or a chance to serve that turns into a calling. Don’t confuse perfection with readiness."

The Blue Streak Experience
Emma was a four-year member of the varsity swim team, helping lead the Streaks to three OAC championships. These diverse experiences, from the pool to the Writing Center, prepared her for the rigors of graduate study at Duke University.
Advice for Students & Peers
Emma views JCU as a place of flexibility and growth that allowed her to detour and adapt until she found her true path. She encourages current students to trust the process: "Everything will work out the way it should. There were plenty of moments where I didn’t think I would make it through a rough patch, but it all works out. His team uses advanced modeling and simulations to ensure solar and battery power are sufficient for deep-space transport, including the current Artemis II mission. Spencer provides real-time engineering expertise from the Mission Evaluation Room (MER) in Houston's Mission Control, bridging the gap between mission planning and live flight data to support the next generation of lunar exploration.
The Blue Streak Experience
At JCU, Spencer balanced a rigorous Engineering Physics curriculum with minors in History and Catholic Studies. He served as Chief of JCU EMS and was a frequent participant in Campus Ministry retreats. A staple of the campus social scene, he played in the Pep Band and was the bass player for the popular campus cover band, Ryan Brown & Friends. Like many Blue Streaks, his JCU connections were lasting; it was on campus where he met his closest friends and his wife.

Spencer attributes his career success to JCU’s liberal arts core, which gave him the communication skills to translate complex engineering data for diverse audiences. "The humanities classes were just as important as the technical knowledge I gained in the Dolan Science Center," he notes. His advice to graduates is to embrace trial and error: "Internships are just as valuable for figuring out what you don't like as what you do. Marcello Hernández '19
Professional Impact
A powerhouse in the comedy world, Marcello is a cast member on Saturday Night Live. He is a son, brother, godfather, and uncle (but not like his sister has a kid, more like his friends have kids, so he's like Funcle Marcello). In January 2026, he released his debut Netflix comedy special, American Boy , and has expanded his creative footprint into screenwriting for film and television (and possibly a book). He encourages you and your friends to watch his special on multiple accounts to rack up the views. Marcello’s impact on the industry is defined by his high-energy storytelling and his ability to bridge cultural experiences, all while maintaining a relentless work ethic that has seen him move from amateur comedy clubs to the premier stage of late-night television.
The Blue Streak Experience
Marcello arrived at JCU as a member of the men’s soccer team from Belen Jesuit High School (FL), but soon found his calling at open mics across Ohio, including winning an amateur competition at Funny Stop Comedy Club in Cuyahoga Falls. In a pivotal moment of growth, he made the difficult decision to pivot from athletics to comedy, a move he widely credits Hector Marinaro and Dejan Mladenovic '06, '25G for "making him be a man and tell the team himself". Leveraging JCU’s academic flexibility, he designed his own major, combining entrepreneurship and communication, to build a foundation for a career in entertainment. Marcello credits the belief and space provided by professors like Bo Smith and Dr. Tom Roche as the catalyst for his professional ambitions. He greatly enjoyed forming his own pathway at JCU while embracing campus life & building strong relationships with fellow Blue Streaks.
Advice for Students & Peers
For Marcello, the JCU legacy is about paying it forward; he established the Bo & Tom – Marcello A. Hernández '19 Scholarship to support students who, like him, need the opportunity to pursue unconventional dreams. His advice is a masterclass in resilience: "Bet on yourself by taking risks; asking shows guts and ambition. Build a healthy relationship with rejection and don't sweat the 'no's.' Measure how hard you are working, work as much as possible, and most importantly, don’t destroy your body."

Beyond her leadership in Recreation, she participated in academic competitions that took her as far as Utah, broadening her horizons and reinforcing the value of the connections she built across campus.
Advice for Students & Peers
The greatest takeaway for Kwan is that JCU’s “elite classroom experience” is only half of the journey—the rest comes from the people and opportunities found outside of it. Her advice to students is to use college to discover what they don’t want to do: "Once I started following my interests personally and professionally, I was able to bloom into the person I am proud to be today." She encourages Blue Streaks to be open to changing their path when their passions point them in a new direction.

At OpenAI, she captures real-world AI use cases among college students to inform product development and global narratives. Previously, she led large-scale educational programs at Substack, helping writers build successful publications. Her career has centered on "building with, not for," a principle she honed while designing community programs for various tech startups alongside early industry pioneers.
The Blue Streak Experience
As a senior, Katie had the opportunity through the entrepreneurship department to write and publish a book exploring how communities form around live music, using it as a way to investigate a question that still guides her work: "How do you create connection?" With the encouragement of mentors to “use the student card,” she began reaching out to people she admired, turning curiosity into conversation—and eventually into a professional partnership that has spanned three companies since graduating.
Advice for Students & Peers
Drawing on the Jesuit ideal of being "for and with others," Katie integrates a practice of reflection into her work in the fast-paced tech world. Her advice to students is to stop waiting for an invitation: "If you’re looking for something, there’s a good chance others are too. Start small and invite people in." This philosophy led her to co-found the Brooklyn Euchre Club with Emma Schapp '18, turning a simple game they loved to play in college into a thriving community in her new city.

To current students, he advises staying present: "Put yourself out there and say yes to what Carroll has to offer. The greatest lesson Leanne took from John Carroll is the importance of investing time in what truly "seizes your imagination." She views the Jesuit value of being a person "for and with others" as an integrated life practice rather than a separate task. Her advice to current students is to embrace the unknown: "Be intentional, but don’t feel like you need to have everything figured out right away. Growth rarely happens when you’re completely comfortable. Say yes to opportunities you don’t feel fully ready for yet and figure it out along the way."

Advice for Students & Peers
Zachary is a staunch advocate for the liberal arts, believing it prepares students for a life of purpose beyond just a salary. "A liberal arts education allows you to think critically and communicate effectively about complex issues," he notes. His advice to current students is to be open to every invitation: "Say ‘yes’ to just about everything. If someone sees an opportunity in you that you haven't realized yet, accept the invitation to learn about yourself." For graduates, he stresses the importance of faculty: "Stay connected to your professors. Their support doesn't end with a diploma, it’s actually just the beginning."
