Italy is one of the world’s most important cultural centers. Immerse yourself in the study of its history, language, and people.

A biologist fascinated by Da Vinci’s marriage of art and science. A health practitioner's inquiry into the Mediterranean’s high life expectancy. A writer’s insatiable curiosity about her ancestors’ journeys and how it influences everything she creates. Business, culture, fashion, theater, diplomacy. Affascinante!

There is nothing quite like the rich, rounded perspective that the study of Italian brings. It’s a language that complements any field because it has influenced every field — and it continues to remain an extraordinary, relevant tool for doctors, lawyers, teachers, artists, communicators, and scientists alike.

Whether you’re looking for a career in business, international relations, or the arts, a degree in Italian Studies from John Carroll University will give you a world of opportunities.

Program Overview & Outcomes

Italians and the Italian language have made a distinctive contribution to art, architecture, cuisine, music, science, literature, and film, and theater. As an Italian Studies major at John Carroll, you’ll explore these areas and more — while also developing proficiency in a language spoken by more than three million people around the world. (Italian is the official language of not only Italy, but also Vatican City, San Marino, Switzerland, and parts of Croatia and Slovenia.)

Italian Studies majors will learn to:

  • Communicate skillfully and effectively in Italian
  • Interpret features of the culture of the Italian-speaking world (such as art, literature, film, and customs) in the context of its history, politics, religion, or geography
  • Demonstrate emerging intercultural competence
