I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life that you and your descendants may live" (Deut. 30:19). These words mark a pivotal moment in the history of Israel, and a turning point in the story of the Bible. Explore this sacred text with one of the world's foremost scholars of the Book of Deuteronomy, and reflect on its enduring significance for Jews and Christians today.

Fr. Dominik Markl, a Jesuit priest from Austria, is Professor of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. His research focuses on the Pentateuch, imperial theologies in the ancient Near East, the development of monotheism, cultural trauma, and the Bible in the history of political ideas. His edited books include The Fall of Jerusalem and the Rise of the Torah (Mohr Siebeck, 2016) and The Decalogue and Its Cultural Influence (Phoenix Press, 2013).

Response by Dr. Noah Bickart, Mandel Chair of Jewish Studies at John Carroll University.
