1st Gen Blue Streak program recognizes and assists First-generation students in reducing the cultural capital gap before, during, and after academic years and advocates for social justice.

You are a First-Gen If...

  • Your natural or adoptive parents did not receive a bachelor's degree, or
  • You lived with only one parent and the parent did not receive a bachelor's degree, or
  • You did not live with or receive support from a natural or an adoptive parent, or
  • Your natural or adoptive parents received a bachelor's degree in a country outside the United States.
  • Social capital: information, resources, and support that people can utilize and draw on from their relationships and the ability to secure certain benefits from those social networks.
  • Cultural capital: inherited knowledge or skills that can be converted into value as people move through different fields or settings.

First-generation students may not have the resources, support, or interpersonal network to navigate their school years as smoothly as continuing-generation studetns.

If you want to learn more about existing supports on campus, feel free to reach out to the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion.

Look for faculty and staff members with the sticker below. They were also First-Generation when they went to school. They have a wealth of knowledge to share with you and will be happy to hear about your experience!
