The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act is federal legislation that provides a variety of financial support to individuals and organizations affected by the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic.
The CARES Act includes a Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) that provides more than $14 billion in emergency funding to higher education. Of those funds, more than $6 billion must go directly to students in the form of emergency financial aid grants (HEERF-student share) for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 crisis.
John Carroll University will receive a total of $2,224,405 of which at least half ($1,112,203) must be provided directly to students for their expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care. The other half may be used by the university to cover costs associated with significant changes to the delivery of instruction due to the coronavirus.
We are committed to assisting all eligible students that may have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic to the greatest extent possible with the CARES Act funds available. You should request funds based on your actual financial need for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care, for the time period of the emergency. The actual amount each student will receive is based on the number of applications received and the funds available.
The CARES Act Emergency Fund application committee will begin reviewing applications on Friday, May 15, 2020. Decisions and funding amounts will be announced by Friday, June 5, 2020.
You will be contacted via your JCU email address with the outcome of your application and the next steps in the process.
All emergency grants will be processed through student accounts. Emergency grants will be directly deposited into bank accounts for students who are enrolled in direct deposit. Students without direct deposit will receive a refund check in the mail.

No. This is an emergency grant to help you manage unexpected expenses related to the coronavirus, and it will not have any impact on other financial aid you may be eligible to receive.
Any CARES Act funding awarded to you will be paid to you directly, and it will not cover any outstanding balances owed to John Carroll University. Any outstanding balance owed to JCU will remain the responsibility of the student.

- If you requested Housing and/or Food expenses, but received a refund of your room and board fees from JCU, your request was decreased by the amount of the refund you already received.
- If you requested Technology expenses, but received technology support from JCU to aid in the transition to online courses, that request was reduced accordingly.
John Carroll University automatically awarded CARES Act funds to all Pell-eligible students who were enrolled in classes after March 13, 2020. If you received a CARES grant without submitting an application, according to our records, you are part of this population.
These funds are for expenses you incurred related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus.
Lost wages, impact of financial hardship (e.g., students or parent’s loss of income impacting ability to pay tuition and fees), expenses you would have incurred even if the campus operations had NOT been disrupted, etc. are not eligible expenses for CARES Act funding.

NON Pell-eligible Students
If you have direct deposit set up correctly, you should have received your funds. If not, then a paper check was mailed on 6/10/20 or 6/11/20.
Pell-eligible Students
If you received a grant based on your eligibility as a Pell student, your refund will be processed on 6/11/20. If you have direct deposit set up correctly, you should receive your funds on the next business day. If not, then a paper check will be mailed on 6/11/20 or 6/12/20.
ALL STUDENTS
If you receive an email like the one below, this means your grant was processed through your TouchNet account and the funds will be directly deposited into your account on the next day. If you do not receive an email like the one below by the end of the week of June 8th, you should expect a paper check.
