Dear Colleagues,

As we began the work of the strategic planning process last year, one stated goal was to examine the organizational structures within the institution towards better integrating work that advances the mission of educating students for learning, leadership, and service. In the course of our work, it became increasingly clear that the Academic plan and the Student Experience plan were inextricably linked through the lived experiences of our students as they navigate their paths to their degree. So, too, the work of our Enrollment Management Division in recruiting students to John Carroll is linked to our efforts to provide quality academic and co-curricular experiences. 

Intentionally integrating the work of our three explicitly student facing divisions – Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Enrollment Management – into a holistic experience towards the success of our students emerged as a priority during the planning process. Student success is a product of recruiting and enrolling students who will benefit the most from a JCU education, be highly satisfied with their academic and co-curricular experiences, and be rewarded with excellent outcomes both with respect to their personal and professional lives.

Building on an already strong partnership between the Academic and Student Affairs Divisions and capitalizing on an increasing integration with Enrollment Management, these three divisions will now be brought together under the Provost Office structure. Beginning June 1, 2020, the Student Affairs and the Enrollment Management Divisions joined the Academic Affairs Division in reporting to the Provost.

This move will allow us to deepen the work begun over the last several semesters in implementing an integrated student success model that permeates the academic and co-curricular infrastructure and creates a holistic experience for the student. The integration is a model that is increasingly important for recruiting new students to JCU. The engagement of students in the purposeful planning of their educational experiences will require more intentional integration of academic and co-curricular support services built on mentoring relationships as well as the careful selection and sequencing of experiential learning opportunities that complement and enhance student learning.

We believe that this move gives us the best opportunity to capitalize on our resources to effect a stronger future for John Carroll University.
