Dear Members of the John Carroll University Community,

I am sad to announce the passing of Robert Heltzel ‘70, alumnus, devoted husband and father, entrepreneur, community leader, and former member of the John Carroll University Board of Directors. Bob graduated from John Carroll University in 1970 with a B.S. in Economics. He and his wife, Heidi, have five children, one of whom is a JCU alumna, Erin ‘08 ‘15G. He is the retired president and owner of the Kenilworth Steel Company. Bob was a member of the JCU Board of Directors for nine years (2009-2018), serving on the Advancement Committee, Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee, and Student Affairs Committee. He was a recipient of the 2014 Alumni Medal.

As a student, he played on the men’s soccer team and was a member of the sailing club. He is a graduate of Gilmour Academy and is originally from Warren, Ohio. Two of his brothers, Paul ’69 and Mike ’91, also graduated from JCU. Bob set up a scholarship in honor of Paul after his passing.

Bob and Heidi were major donors to the University gifting close to $1 million to support the special collections in the library, including especially rare Abraham Lincoln and Civil War memorabilia. He and Heidi also created The Robert E. Heltzel Endowed Scholarship to support students from Warren, Ohio. Bob held board positions with St. Joseph Hospital in Warren, Ohio; Warren Chamber of Commerce; and the Center for Learning, Villa Marie, Pennsylvania.
