Boler undergraduates from various disciplines spent their summer preparing to launch the school’s first social enterprise on wheels — a fresh off the assembly line Food Buggy. As students from a social entrepreneurship course plotted marketing and operational plans, their peers in accounting worked up financial projections and cost estimates, says faculty lead and Entrepreneurship Chair Doan Winkel. “We look to have students running this as a full-time business,” Winkel says. “It will follow a for-profit model by day, and then turn around on select evenings and weekends and meet the needs of the homeless community.” Boler’s Donnelly School for Leadership and Social Innovation looks to launch more of these student-driven enterprises that build real-world business acumen and translate Jesuit contemplation of mission into action.
