"The small family atmosphere really drew me to JCU. I love the campus and the staff was so helpful throughout the entire process. I first became interested in this scholarship since it was such a unique way to express myself and show creativity in a way that I’ve never been asked to do before. I feel very blessed and thankful to have received this scholarship. It's going to be a big help to my family."

The students learned about their awards during surprise Zoom calls set up by the Enrollment Division. They were joined by family members, representatives from their high schools, and members of the John Carroll community, including President Al Miciak.
“It is an honor for me to meet with students like Sam and Nicole and acknowledge their creativity and lived commitments to the values that underlie a John Carroll education,” said President Miciak. “As we prepare students for the work of the future, we draw inspiration from them and the many others who participated in this scholarship competition.”
The Ignatian Heritage Awards also include the John J. Matthews Scholarship, which supports those dedicated to Catholic education. This year’s winners are Thomas Richardson, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, Akron, OH, and Paige Dugan, Sacred Heart Academy, Buffalo, NY.
Ignatian Heritage Scholarship Information
The Ignatian Heritage Scholarship criteria include six Jesuit core values and the impact of those values relating to student experience:
- Finding God in all Things inspires students to look for God—and for goodness, truth, beauty, and justice—in all their studies, activities, relationships, and in all of creation. Because JCU welcomes people of all faiths and worldviews, this is meant to be an inclusive, imaginative search that is open to all.
- Choosing the Greater Good (Magis) inspires students to discern which good choices bring about greater, more everlasting good in a particular situation. In choosing this way, we become ethical leaders, give greater glory to God, and make the world a better place.
- Caring for the Whole Person (cura personalis) inspires students to integrate their head, heart, intellect, and feelings as they learn in and outside the classroom.
- Being People For and With Others inspires students to stand with those poor and marginalized in a spirit of generosity and service, working together to advocate for justice and build community.
- Caring for the Earth, our Common Home inspires students to recognize the sacredness and interconnectedness of all creation and to realize our shared responsibility to care for the earth, promote sustainability, and reverse climate change.
