The Nonprofit Administration Program is pleased to announce Miranda Barnewall is the recipient of the Nonprofit Leader of Tomorrow Award, 2022. Miranda was selected because of her dedication, leadership, and passion for the sector. She graduates this summer.

Miranda joined the Nonprofit Program at the height of COVID, in the fall of 2020. She had left her career in film archiving and decided to change paths.

In Miranda's essay, she wrote about her frustrations with salary at the time and was introduced to the concept of Board Governance by her mentor. With little knowledge of the nuances that come along with a Board of Directors, Miranda felt called to join the program.

Today, three years after her conversation with her mentor, she can now speak about the importance and the intricacies of a Board and so much more. Miranda said, "The Nonprofit Administration Program's mission is "to develop unapologetic social justice leaders" (John Carroll University Nonprofit Administration Program). Course content is undoubtedly part of this, but it is not complete without seeing leadership in action."

While the leadership of her professors impressed her, Miranda noted the leadership her classmates embodied was most impressionable. Miranda said, "Whenever my classmates sought my opinion, offered constructive feedback, and acknowledged my contributions, I witnessed what it means to be a thoughtful and supportive leader. I owe just as much to my classmates as to my academic coursework for preparing me to be a transformative nonprofit leader."

Hannah Hill, who nominated Miranda and is also the NPA Graduate Assistant and her classmate said, "It has been such a pleasure getting to know Miranda while watching her come into her own throughout the last two years. We began the program at the same time, and she has exemplified great leadership qualities with each passing semester. I also believe that Miranda is committed to social justice, excellence, leadership, and service and would make a fantastic candidate for the Nonprofit Leader of Tomorrow Award."

We are so proud of Miranda for this incredible accomplishment, and we wish her great success on her journey as an “unapologetic social justice” Nonprofit Leader of Tomorrow.
