Biography

 

Wendy Wiedenhoft Murphy joined the department of Sociology and Criminology in 2003 after receiving her doctorate at the University of Maryland. She has published multiple books, including Consumer Culture and Society (2017), Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Sociology, 2nd Edition (2020, co-edited with George Ritzer), Introduction to Sociology, 5th Edition (2019, co-authored with George Ritzer) and Essentials of Sociology, 3rd Edition (2018, co-authored with George Ritzer). Her latest journal publications, “Accounting for Justice: Citizen Public Debt Audits and the Case of Puerto Rico” (2022) and “Exploited and Empowered Inclusion: Contesting the Flawed Consumer in the United States” (2021), focus on her research interests in debt, consumerism, and inequality. Currently, she is writing a book, Sustainability and Climate Change, to be published by SAGE in 2025.
