Welcome Back!

Thank you, John Carroll students and instructors, for making the 2020-2021 Academic Year so successful! We received over 1,300 session requests, and our consultants enjoyed meeting with new students and maintaining working relationships with returning students.

To be mindful of the health and safety of both our consultants and student writers, the Writing Center will offer a limited number of in-person appointments as well as online synchronous and online asynchronous appointments for the Spring Semester 2022. We will open on Monday, January 31, and our schedule will be as follows:

  • Monday & Tuesday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday & Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
  • Friday, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

We are excited to be able to welcome students into our physical space on campus and talk through papers face to face. Per university regulations, all students, whether fully vaccinated or not, are required to wear a mask indoors (e.g. the Writing Center). A student who chooses not to wear a mask properly is not allowed to attend in-person (face-to-face) appointments in the Writing Center. 

Types of Appointments

Our sessions will be available in three formats:

  • face-to-face (F2F), which will meet in the Writing Center (OC 207). Because of the Writing Center's space restrictions, we will only be able to accommodate one F2F consultation in the Writing Center at any given time. If there are no F2F appointments available at the time you request, we will switch you to a synchronous appointment. 
  • synchronous (Zoom), which is akin to face-to-face because writer and consultant would meet via Zoom at a scheduled time to read and talk through the writer's paper. We use Google Docs for the session and usually ask the writer to share their screen, to make it easier for them to make changes or notes for their own revision process later.
  • asynchronous, where a writer submits their paper to the Writing Center and a review is assigned to a consultant at a particular day and time, and the consultant adds in comments, corrections, and questions via Google Docs. The writer is not expected to be "available" during the review, but is then unable to ask for follow-up questions or another review without another appointment.

What type of appointment is best for me?

While we know that we cannot force you to choose one format over the other, we do recommend face-to-face and synchronous sessions—especially if you are requesting our assistance at the beginning of your writing process, where you want to brainstorm or try to talk through some confusing parts. We say this because in the world of writing centers, the "talk" is where the true content emerges; through questions, suggestions, and idea-sharing, you and your consultant will work together to refine your content and ensure that your paper is clear. Our goal is always to help you leave a session with a manageable plan for revision.

That said, asynchronous reviews will also provide you with high-quality feedback from a consultant, as well as questions and recommendations to consider as you revise. In addition, asynchronous reviews are more suitable for students who have family or work obligations outside of the classroom, and are unable to commit to a live session on video or audio. 

We will continue to be as flexible as possible when it comes to working with writers this semester. Any writer who may need accommodations is still able to request them when signing up for an appointment using our new scheduling system: https://jcu.mywconline.com. Every Writer Needs an Audience

The JCU Writing Center offers free, one-on-one consulting services to all members of the John Carroll community: students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

John Carroll’s Writing Center traces its origins to the early 1990s, and found its home in O’Malley 207 when the building opened in 1994. Informal tutorial sessions during the Center’s beginning years have developed into an enterprise that works five days a week. We continue to prove that we are a vital campus resource by seeing hundreds of students (undergraduate and graduate) with all types of assignments (composition papers, lab reports, research papers, creative writing, and Masters’ essays, to name a few) from all disciplines each semester.

The staff consists of highly-trained graduate and undergraduate students who have completed courses, workshops, and practicum experiences that prepare them for helping writers from every discipline. The consultants help writers of all skill levels and can provide help on any aspect of writing, at every step in the writing process, and on most kinds of texts.

Our Services

Currently, our services are available by appointment only, but we do take same day appointments! We have a new online scheduling system that makes it easy for you to make, modify, and, if needed, cancel appointments at your convenience. 

The Best Way to Schedule an Appointment

To make an appointment, go to the following website: https://jcu.mywconline.com. You will need to click on the link that will take you to the JCU single-sign on page. Enter your JCU credentials to login. The first time you login, you will need to answer a few registration questions. 

Once you're on the scheduler, click on one of the available times (white spaces) to make an appointment. The appointment form that pops up will ask you to select the type of appointment (F2F, Zoom, or asynchronous) you want to have. Feel free to stop by OC 207 or email us if you have any questions. 

The Writing Center is open Monday & Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday & Thursday from 9:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m., and on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Be aware that...

The Writing Center follows the university’s schedule with breaks and holidays, as well as with delayed openings or early closures due to weather.
