We offer 30-minute or 60-minute consultations to current JCU students, faculty, and staff members, as well as alumni. On average, consultations for papers under six to seven pages can run about 30 minutes. For papers over seven pages, we recommend either requesting a 60-minute appointment or bringing sections of the paper in at separate times.

Please note: for undergraduate and graduate students with essays or projects that are 20 pages long or more, we strongly recommend bringing one section in at a time.

In addition to our regular services available in O’Malley 207, we offer the following:

  • Sunday and Wednesday After-Hours in Seminar A From 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays, there will be consultants available in the Seminar A room on the ground floor of Grasselli Library & Breen Learning Center. These hours run on a walk-in basis only; we do not take appointments.
  • The Writing Center @ Boler Beginning in fall 2019, consultants who are Boler College of Business students will offer appointments for students who wish to seek assistance with assignments for any course within the Boler College of Business (including EN 251, Business Communications). The consultants will be available on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and on Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in AD 04. At this point, these hours will also run on a walk-in basis.
  • Long-Term Consulting If you feel that you would benefit most from being matched with one Writing Consultant for all or part of a semester, please contact the Center Director, Maria Soriano Young, at extension 1911 or We can provide longer-term, individualized, one-on-one consulting services to a limited number of students each semester.

After-Hours in the Learning Commons

The Writing Center extends its boundaries and consultants across campus and beyond to provide additional meeting options and welcome many writers.

We offer evening hours twice a week as part of JCU’s Learning Commons, which is located on the ground floor of Grasselli Library & Breen Learning Center. Two experienced consultants are available on Wednesday and Sunday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Seminar A to help writers and to contribute to the collaborative atmosphere of the Learning Commons.

Please note that unlike the advanced-scheduling options in the O’Malley Center location of the Writing Center, these After-Hours hours work on a first-come, first-served basis–we do not take appointments.
