Academic Program Assistantships

Applicants can only apply for Graduate Assistant positions in the Academic Department of their program of study. If your department is not listed, there are no open Academic Program positions (for example an Education major can not apply for a Business Academic Program Assistantship).

If you have applied to the M.S. in Biology, your academic program application is also your application for a graduate assistantship in the Biology Department. You do not need to complete a Graduate Assistant application. If admitted into the M.S. in Biology program, you are required to do your assistantship in the Biology Department.

Job Summary: Department of Biology Graduate Assistant

The primary responsibility of each GA is to provide support as a teaching assistant in our laboratory courses, and in the maintenance of laboratory facilities and equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide in-class and/or online instructional support for students and assist instructors in delivering course content; this will include any preparation required to demonstrate knowledge and competency in the subjects being presented in lab (e.g., studying lab material, attending lectures).
  • Providing logistical support outside of regularly scheduled laboratory classes for setup and teardown of weekly laboratories.
  • Preparation and grading of weekly pre-lab and in-class assessment.
  • Assist in preparation, proctoring, set-up/tear-down, and grading of midterm and final exams for lectures and labs.
  • Maintaining 2 office hours per week for undergraduates to seek assistance with assignments, lab reports, and preparation for examinations, for the lecture and laboratory courses to which the GA is assigned.
  • Provide mentorship for our undergraduates, and to serve as role models for our students.
  • Monitoring and reporting instances of bias to instructors and administration.
  • Maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities.

Depending upon the course, additional work for GAs may include:

  • Coordinating work responsibilities with all other GAs assigned to a given section of lab.
  • Preparing detailed dissections of anatomical material to use for in-class observations, quizzes, and examinations (e.g., BL157, BL158, BL160, BL230L, 231L, BL350L).
  • Maintenance and care of live animals used in our laboratories.
  • Maintenance and care of live plants in our greenhouse.
  • Depending upon the laboratory course, GAs may be required to maintain van certification to drive university vehicles for short-distance transportation during some field-based laboratory courses).

Boler College of Business Graduate Assistants

The following positions are restricted to applicants admitted to or matriculated in a Boler College of Business graduate program.

Position Descriptions:

Academic Success Center Graduate Assistant

Contribute to promoting, advising, and coaching students in academic success strategies. Teach multiple sections of AS 112, ACADEMIC SUCCESS STRATEGIES, and coach students one-on-one in academic skills and improving their academic performance. Assist with Peer Success Advisor presentations, coaching and oversight. Provide personal email, text, and phone outreach to students with academic concerns.

 

Boler Dean's Office

The Graduate Assistant (GA) serves in a part-time time (20 hours weekly) working position and reports to the assigned department supervisor. The GA engages with Boler administration, faculty, alumni, and students to enhance Boler’s academic and student programming at John Carroll University. The GA contributes to the advancement of Boler’s mission and strategic plan. The College's commitment to this position is to provide a professional and personal development opportunity that prepares the GA for the workplace while supporting the Boler College of Business and John Carroll University. 

 

Boler Professional Development (BPD) Program Graduate Assistant

The primary duties of this position involve day-to-day management and execution of the Boler Professional Development (BPD) program curriculum and events. The position's primary responsibility is to ensure Boler students meet their BPD graduation requirements and have superior professional skills upon graduation. This position is a full-time (20 hours per week) graduate assistantship and reports to the Boler Professional Development Program Manager.

 

Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship Graduate Assistant

The GA for the Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship assists in the operations of the entrepreneurship program. This includes academic programs, social ventures operated by entrepreneurship students, and community programs. Our team has the privilege of developing and implementing a variety of learning experiences and events for JCU and high school students, and the Greater Cleveland community. Our GA is an integral member of our team, assisting with all aspects of designing and implementing these experiences and programs. The Director of the Muldoon Center will work with our GA to identify skills they want to develop and plug them in to opportunities to do so.

Job Summary: Department of Counseling Graduate Assistant

Graduate assistants in the Department of Counseling are expected to support the research and scholarship of faculty members. Graduate assistants are also expected to help with recruiting/professional events as the Department of Counseling looks to expand and diversify its student enrollment and population. The ideal candidate will bring both professionalism and enthusiasm to this position as they gain professional and personal development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Aid faculty with research, including but not limited to: completing literature reviews, collecting data, analyzing data, and coding.
  • Help with recruiting/professional events (may include some evening or weekend attendance).
  • Assist with updating site directories for practicum and internship sites, as well as other Department of Counseling forms as needed.
  • Support prospective students during the application process, such as answering questions about the program(s), providing tours, etc.
  • Collaborate with faculty members for workshops/programs hosted by the Department of Counseling.
  • Represent the Department of Counseling in a professional, ethical, and respectful manner when interacting with other professionals and students.

Working Hours and Conditions

Graduate assistants in the Department of Counseling are expected to maintain a schedule each semester of their 20 hours of work per week. The Department of Counseling has a graduate assistant office that can be used Monday through Friday. Graduate assistants are not required to have set working hours on the weekends but may be asked to help with events that take place on the weekends or they may need to work independently on the weekends in order to complete tasks. Graduate assistants are expected to maintain regular communication with their department supervisor regarding the availability.

Job Summary: Department of Theology and Religious Studies Graduate Assistant

The Department of Theology & Religious Studies seeks to fill two (2) full-time GA positions for the 2023-2024 academic year. TRS GAs work collaboratively with each other, faculty, and staff supporting the teaching, research, and service responsibilities of the department.      

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help faculty develop syllabi, design assignments, build Canvas sites, and other teaching-related activities, including holding regular office hours
  • Research books for course adoption; assist with book orders
  • Place items on reserve for courses
  • Attend class to facilitate teaching

Job Summary: Campus Ministry Office - Graduate Assistant/Resident Minister

The Graduate Assistant/Resident Minister is an important part of the University’s Campus Ministry program and represents the Campus Ministry Department in the Residence Halls. They work in collaboration with their supervisory campus minister to integrate faith with campus social and academic life. They establish an active religious presence in residential areas, and encourage faith development and religious practice in the lives of students. This graduate student serves as a resource for students of all religious traditions and lends support and strength to the programs and activities of the campus ministry department and the residence halls.

Expectations of the Graduate Assistant/Resident Minister:

  • Plan at least one major Campus Ministry program per semester
  • Plan and implement hall-based programs
  • Meet weekly with the GA/Resident Ministry team
  • Meet weekly with the Campus Ministry staff
  • Campus Ministry supervision on a bi-weekly basis
  • Availability for evening and weekend programming
  • Regular presence at JCU dining facilities
  • Area Coordinator check-in on a monthly basis
  • Mandatory training program in August, a mid-year and end of the year evaluation

Job Summary: Center of Service-Learning and Social Action (CSSA) Graduate Assistant

The graduate assistant for the Center for Service-Learning and Social Action assists the Director in providing logistical support for community-engaged placements, service-learning activities and program support including the Carroll Reads Early Literacy Program, the Power Source Program, and the Youth for Justice civic education program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide logistical and operational support and assistance with academic service-learning, student engagement, and faculty outreach at the Center.
  • Assist the team with the start of semester launch, including verifying service activities, compliance requirements, and student registration.
  • Take lead responsibility for coordinating the Carroll Reads Early Literacy Program and Power Source Programs drawing on detailed existing how-to’s.
  • Provide support and assistance with special events and research projects.
  • Assist with orientation and training activities including getting materials ready, taking attendance, working with student leaders.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with student leaders, monitor progress, and bring any issues to the attention of the director.
  • Work on special projects as assigned including research and writing assignments for CSSA, website, newsletter, or annual report as needed.
  • Analyze CSSA semester-end assessment data and program data, prepare assessment reports measuring program effectiveness and identifying implications for program improvement.

The Carroll Reads Early Literacy Program:

The Carroll Reads Early Literacy Program addresses the needs of literacy intervention among children in grades K‐3.  It originated as part of the national initiative established by President Clinton in 1996, “America Reads”, designed to ensure that every child learns to read well and independently by the end of third grade.  The G.A. works with the elementary schools in the program and helps coordinate the logistics, training and ongoing needs of the program participants by serving as a resource to the Program Coordinators on site who help guide the students in the schools.

The Power Source Program:

The Power Source program is an emotional literacy program for at-risk youth in correctional facilities helping them discover their own resilience while building essential skills. Power Source equips adolescents with the social and emotional regulation skills they need to build healthy relationships, break intergenerational cycles of violence, addiction and other high-risk behaviors, and be successful in the workforce. This unique and transformative program is both preventative and rehabilitative.  The G.A.  works with the student leaders assigned to this placement and coordinates the weekly sessions using the step by step program resources and materials provided.

Youth for Justice Program:

The Youth for Justice Program is a classroom-based civic education program for 8th grade children in Cleveland area schools.  JCU students work with eighth grade classrooms in Cleveland to address the question; “How can we use our civil rights to advocate for justice?”  Students follow a weekly curriculum, develop a social justice project and present their outcomes at an end-of-the year Summit at JCU.  The G.A. works with the student leaders assigned to this program and provides logistical support and ongoing mentoring

    Job Summary: Recreational Programs Graduate Assistant

    The Graduate Assistant of Recreational Programs for the Department of Recreation at John Carroll University is a two-semester commitment, under the guidance of the Director of Recreation, and is renewable for a second academic year. They work closely with the Director, student supervisors, and other student employees to oversee all JCU Recreation programming including: Intramural Sports, Club Sports, and Group Fitness. Vital components of this position are substantial knowledge of and experience with collegiate recreation programming, student and staff development, and leadership and teamwork.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist with all aspects of the Intramural Sports program including 20 sport leagues and tournaments annually
    • Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating Intramural Sports Supervisors, Officials, and Scorekeepers
    • Act as campus liaison and oversee operation of Intramural Sports software (IM Leagues)
    • Develop and update staff and participant manuals and rulebooks for all sports, leagues, and tournaments

    This is a 20-hour per week assistantship. University core business hours are generally 5:30 am - 5:00 pm.     Job Summary: Graduate School Graduate Assistant

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This position’s responsibilities will include overall support to the Graduate School, focusing specifically on assistance with recruitment, as well as building community among current graduate students.

    1. Recruitment:

    • Develops and leads campus tours:
    • Working with the Admission team, GA leads on-campus tours for prospective students;
    • Helps schedule, develop, and attend recruiting events (e.g., webinars, happy hours);

    2. Community building and outreach:

    • Working with the Graduate Student Experience Advisor, helps plan and provides support for community-building events and Graduate Student Association initiatives;
    • Compiles a monthly newsletter sent out to the entire graduate school community including students, faculty, staff, and alumni;

    Job Summary: Center for Digital Media Graduate Assistant

    The Center for Digital Media (CDM) Graduate Assistant is often the first point of contact for students, staff, faculty, and guests seeking assistance with multimedia projects.  They regularly offer student workshops and other outreach programs designed to promote and demonstrate the use of CDM-supported technologies and equipment.  The Graduate Assistant also assists the Faculty Liaison with the management of the CDM, including the routine hiring and supervision of CDM student assistants, the purchase of equipment for checkout and internal use, maintaining and updating of the CDM’s multimedia workstations, and other day-to-day tasks.

    Job Summary: Learning Commons Graduate Assistant

    The Graduate Assistant for the Learning Commons will work toward continual improvement of the Learning Commons and will serve as a liaison for the library, faculty & students. The GA is the day to day coordinator of the operations of the Learning Commons including hiring, training, supervising, and supporting a staff of student workers. As the LC is the physical embodiment of the academic and wellness goals of the Library, the GA will imagine new possibilities for student support and update existing services. The needs of the Learning Commons will most likely continue to grow and change with our student population’s needs, the GA will also be able to practice flexibility in addition to time management and other needed career skills.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • The LC GA will work with Peer Learning Facilitators to:
      • Determine which subjects have a need for student tutors & hire them
      • Assist with all new hire paperwork 
      • Plan and complete orientation and training
      • Act as a liaison between students and payroll, departments, library staff, etc.
      • Hold students accountable for attendance, behavior, etc.
      • Schedule and reserve rooms for tutoring
      • Create and maintain inter-departmental relationships 
    • Marketing responsibilities for the LC GA are:
      • Update calendar and distribute
      • Update Twitter, Facebook & website as needed
      • Update signage
    • Other duties as assigned including:
      • Be committed to the continual improvements of the Learning Commons (take part in wellness events, collaborate with career center, counseling center, counseling department, academic advising offices)
      • Replenish Learning Commons supplies
      • Maintain assessment of the Learning Commons

    Job Summary: Residence Life Graduate Assistant

    The Office of Residence Life is seeking a graduate assistant for the 2023-2024 academic year to engage in the development of the residential experience. This 20-hour/week assistantship will include the following responsibilities:

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Lead and develop a residential community of  approximately 175-300 students living in one residence hall
    • Supervise, develop, and evaluate 5-7 Resident Assistants (RAs), including 1 Senior RA
    • Conduct bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with individual RAs and facilitate weekly staff meetings
    • Oversee the planning and implementation of all programming and community development initiatives within the residence hall
    • Advise and guide RAs on appropriate student and floor interventions
    • Collaborate with campus partners to intervene with and support students of concern and students at-risk, including mediating elevated roommate conflicts
    • Collaborate with Resident Ministers to support student needs
    • Manage budget lines for community building, programming, and staff development
    • Contribute to Office of Residence Life processes, which may include housing operations, training, recruitment and selection
    • Because of the nature of this position, some hours may be worked on nights and during weekend

    Job Summary: Office of Student Engagement - Fraternity and Sorority Life Graduate Assistant

    The purpose of this position is to manage and administer programs and services for Fraternity and Sorority Life in the Office of Student Engagement. Reporting to the Fraternity and Sorority Advisor (FSA), the Graduate Assistant (GA) for Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) is a member of the Student Affairs staff and works as part of a team to develop a vibrant campus culture focused on student learning and development. The Graduate Assistant will assist in the implementation of engaging co-curricular educational opportunities in support of the students’ personal and interpersonal development, leadership development, professional development and spiritual development. Provide support to the Student Welcome and Transition (SWAT) Leaders.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Advise executive board leaders of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Panhellenic Council (PC).
    • Attend IFC and PC executive board and general meetings.
    • Advise FSL leaders on planning and executing major fraternity and sorority events including but not limited: Fraternity and sorority recruitment, continuous recruitment, educational and leadership development programming and Greek Week.
    • Assist with program evaluation and assessment of student learning initiatives.
    • Coordinate communication and day-to-day support for SWAT Leaders.

    Job Summary: Office of Student Engagement - Organizational Support Graduate Assistant

    Working primarily with the Senior Director of Student Engagement, the main responsibilities of the graduate assistant are to assist in the development, management, and administration of programs and services for student organizations. The graduate assistant also assists in the staffing and development of off-campus and large-scale Student Engagement programming.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Coordinate the development and support of Student Organizations and members.

    Training & Development

    • Coordinate ongoing large-scale training and development for officers in campus student organizations.
    • Manage the student organization Canvas site, including offering trainings for new organization leaders, tracking officer changes, and reviewing website content and events.
    • Meet with the officers of student organizations when necessary in a coaching capacity to ensure organizational growth and leadership development
    • Assist with the development and implementation of advisor training/development sessions as needed.

    Administration

    • Maintain database of petitioning and registered student organizations.
    • Work with the Student Government Director of Student Organizations on the organization recognition process, make sure proper paperwork and constitutions are on file, and make adjustments to necessary websites or other documents with listings of organizations and budget codes.
    • Advise the Student Organization Budget Board (SOBB) and attend all meetings
    • Provide administrative support for organization policy development/enforcement.
    • Maintain current and accurate lists of members, appropriate archives, and other relevant information.
    • Ensure activities and events are consistent with the university mission and the Community Standards Manual.
    • Supervise the officer transition process every winter (as well as April for certain groups).
    • Establish and maintain working relationships with organization advisors.
    • Coordinate the large annual Student Involvement Fair in September as well as a supplemental involvement fair early in the spring semester.

    2. Participate in the staffing and delivery of off-campus Student Engagement events as well as large-scale Campus Traditions ((Streak Week, Homecoming and Family Weekend, Christmas Carroll Eve, Senior Week).

    3. Facilitate leadership development programs for the general student body.

    This individual will assist in the provision of services to students with disabilities. The Graduate Assistant will be responsible for determining reasonable academic and non-academic accommodations for students with disabilities (under supervision). This person will need to be or become proficient in the Americans with Disabilities Act  (ADAAA) as amended and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, training will be provided. Students interested in this position should be enrolled in the mental health counseling, school counseling, or special education program. This position reports to the Director of Student Accessibility Services. Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.
